PhET Interactive simulations in the STEM classroom

Thursday April 15th from 6 pm-7 pm

This webinar will introduce you to the PhET Interactive Simulations project. Founded in 2002 by Nobel Laureate Carl Wieman, the PhET Interactive Simulations project creates free interactive math and science simulations. It is based on extensive education research and engages students through an intuitive, game-like environment where students learn through exploration and discovery. Teachers have access to simulation-specific tips and video primers, resources for teaching with simulations, and activities shared by the teacher community.

Using Perusall in STEM Teacher Education: Jumpstarting Discussion and Community

Wednesday, March 17th from 4 pm- 5 pm

Imagine a space where each person in a class shares their perspective on powerful media about STEM education and listens to the ideas of others. We will describe how we are using Perusall in two classes serving CalTeach STEM students to promote analysis of the text, engagement with one another's perspective, and identification of themes from the text that are important to the students for discussion in class. This talk will feature concrete examples, and questions to discuss with the audience about ways to advance the use of joint reading for STEM education learning.

Field Inquiry in the Virtual Classroom: Incorporating the outdoors into your remote learning environment  

Wednesday, March 10th from 4 pm- 5 pm

 In this interactive presentation, we will explore ways to engage students in the iterative process of observation and thinking that is essential to inquiry in all disciplines. Using direct observation and field journaling, students are encouraged to explore the natural environment on their home turf and develop testable questions that can be explored through further observation. As access to natural environments varies widely among students, we will also discuss ways to adapt these activities to make them more equitable.

Exploratorium Snacks: Bite-Sized, Hands-On Science Activities Can Help You Make A Science Meal

Thursday, February 11th from 5 pm-6:30 pm 

The Exploratorium has published online for free more than 250 science activities for teachers, students, and parents. Snacks are scaled-down classroom versions of our unique exhibits which are designed to help people investigate scientific phenomena directly. Written in a collaboration between science teachers and scientists and tested with teachers and students before being published, you'll know that they work. Each also includes a discussion of the science. Over the last year, we've reexamined our Snacks to make them more versatile for online and hybrid use, and we are adding new Snacks every year. Come play with a few snacks that will just use some materials you already have around the house. Bring pennies, a condiment of your choice, some string or a shoelace, a piece of metal that you can tie to the string like a spoon, and some Scotch tape and play your way into discovering our catalog of free materials.

Agile Project Management for Effective Collaboration in Any Learning Environment

Thursday, November 12th from 4:30 PM- 5:30 PM

In this interactive presentation, we will explore strategies for scaffolding popular project management methodologies used in a variety of professional settings to work in the K-12 classroom. Participants will learn simple approaches to reconceptualize “to do” lists and team roles to efficiently chunk tasks and resources while equitably distributing responsibilities among team members remotely, in person, and anywhere in between. The tools and resources provided in this presentation are best suited for students in grades 6-12, but the underlying ideas and techniques are accessible for all ages.

Desmos:  Maybe More There Than You Think

Thursday, October 29th from 6:00 PM- 7:30 PM

Desmos began just a few years ago as an incredibly friendly and powerful online graphing calculator. Since then the tools it provides to improve instruction have grown tremendously.  In this session, we will first take a broad look at Desmos’ capabilities and then focus more closely on the power of pre-made and custom classroom activities that can help you deliver quality instruction. These tools can improve instruction in a wide variety of settings: synchronous and asynchronous, at distance, and in the classroom.  Learn to create and run your own classroom activities by the end of the session.
