K12 Teachers

Calling All Science and Math Teachers!

The CalTeach UC Merced program is looking for mentor teachers to provide students in the program with time in a K12 classroom to learn first-hand how to become great teachers. If you work in the local area schools and are interested in hosting a UC Merced student for a semester of fieldwork, check out the frequently asked questions to learn more!

Frequently asked questions:

  • What is the schedule and time commitment to be a mentor teacher?
    • UC Merced CalTeach students will be assigned to a mentor teacher for three hours a week for ten weeks.
    • Under the guidance of a mentor teacher, CalTeach students are expected to observe the classroom, work with small groups and individual students, and prepare and present one inquiry-based lesson toward the end of the semester.
    • A mentor teacher orientation is scheduled prior to the start of fieldwork each semester. It is important that you can attend this event to meet your student and answer their questions.
    • The mentor teacher will be requested to complete an online survey at the mid point and the end of the semester to evaluate a CalTeach student's performance.

Do I receive a stipend for mentoring students?

  • Mentor teachers receive $275/student mentored each semester.

What if my student doesn't show up to fieldwork?

  • Establishing communication early in the semester with your student is critical for success. If your student doesn't show up when they are supposed to, please contact them via the agreed upon method. If you don't hear back from them in 24 hours, please contact the CalTeach Program Director at carnold4@ucmerced.edu to let them know the problem.
